JOE PRICE FINALIST at the Blues Foundation's INTERNATIONAL BLUES CHALLENGE 2006 Joe Price was a finalist in the 2006 International Blues Challenge held in Memphis, TN this January. The Blues Challenge had 130 acts from seven nations and 33 states. "Joe gave his all with twenty minutes of foot-stompin' blues. Many observers, myself included, felt that Joe should have been awarded the top spot." --Live Blues List Davenport, IA - Glenn Cotabish Feb.3, 2006

His lyrics are original yet with the feel and texture of traditional blues from the past. He draws on his life experiences and sings from his heart. He has a wide range of styles which, combined with his great guitar playing and his soulful singing, make Joe’s CD’s a favorite at the shop." – McGregor Gaines, President National Resophonic Guitars 2005 Letter of reference
Joe Price 2002 Inductee “This is great: the Iowa’s Blues Hall of Fame is recognizing one of the true pioneers of the Iowa Blues scene.” --James Ronan D.A.S.Y. (Dance & Stay Young Productions), Iowa Rock &Roll Music Association Treasurer 2002
November 2005 Personal Reference Joe Price had the house on its feet during our national broadcast of "Whad'ya Know?" in La Crosse. His musicianship was superb and our audience found his blues to their liking. There are none better. Michael Feldman -- "Whad'ya Know?" -- Public Radio International
3 Days of Bliss International Blues Challenge -- Memphis TN -Don Erickson February 9, 2006 "Another crowd favorite was Joe Price, with his intense blend of highly electrified Mississippi Delta & hill country style of rough-and-tumble BLUES. Playing slide on both a National ResoLectric & a solid body guitar, Price's tone is nothing short of ferociously nasty & his intense & emotional foot-stompin' attack really knocks you back on your heels & makes the hair stand up on you head. I feel his sound epitomizes what electric Country Blues is all about."
"Joe catapults energy when he plays.... Watch his hands before he begins to play. They start to open and close as if he can't wait to begin. If you never had a chance to see Hounddog Taylor, Joe just may be the closest of any musician alive to capture that juke joint feel." -Don Wilcock NE Blues Society Albany, NY July 2006
North Bay Bohemian July 12,2005 "Through this odd-looking voodoo stick (a National ResoLectric guitar) Joe Price has channeled the Mississippi Delta spirit of Robert Johnson for the past 30 years, inflicting the illness known as the blues on countless roadhouse, bar and tavern audiences, and earning himself an induction into Iowa's Blues Hall of Fame; he's even appeared in National's 2003 (and 2006) catalogue clutching his trusty ResoLectric.... He's at his best, however, playing the humming ResoLectric solo, the gifted bluesman and eclectic instrument more than capable of filling up all the empty space." by RV Scheide
"All of the accolades you read about Joe Price pale in comparison to the experience of seeing him play live. He will get your attention! The energy of his shows captivates young and old alike. After performing for over 30 years, Joe Price is an Iowa treasure and poised to become a national treasure." ---Glen Cotabish Live Blues List March 4, 2006
A full schedule of entertainment kicks off at Oak Center General Store with an appearance by Joe and Vicki Price...... The couple's music is "foot-stompin' good time blues". Joe is a virtual one-man blues band, and when joined by wife, Vicki, a fine blues singer and guitarist in her own right, it is an awesome experience."
"All the acts I heard that night were excellent, but no one could beat Joe Price. The decision was unanimous among the judges. What was it that made Joe Price the winner? It's hard to put into words. I not only heard his music but I felt it. Like my own child's cry, my lover's whisper, or my best friend's laugh, it was something so distinguishable to my ear that it stood out among all other. That's the way the blues is too. It is more than sound; it's a feeling you get when you hear it. "What is the blues?" Listen to Joe Price and he'll tell you." ----Nancy Crinnigan's Lizard Creek Blues Society Newsletter October 12, 2005
"I sauntered down to the Mill on Saturday night to catch Joe Price. Yow! The man can play. And as far as I know, besides Mose Allison, he's the only living musician to be mentioned by name in a Greg Brown song. 'Give me a whiskey, wine and beer/ I got a feeling Joe Price has been here.' It is some of the most exciting music I've seen in a long time, bar none. Just him and his guitar. He *IS* his guitar. Catch him if you get the chance--you'll see why Greg Brown and that crowd have long called him 'The Buddha.'" ---Nic Arp Greg Brown discussion group March 3, 2003
Mike Toschi & At the Spine - Seattle based punk band Journal Posting for September 30, 2005 400 Bar Minneapolis, MN "Although playing a bill with artists unlike us doesn't help us connect with potential fans, it does however allow us to watch some great music. We were lucky enough to open for a guy named Joe Price, a blues singer and guitarist who put most punk and hardcore bands to shame with his level of energy and musical expression. Stomping his foot and carrying the bass and lead on his own, he kept up the intensity for roughly two hours. A great guy that told us after our set he would have loved to play with us. I wish he would have said something during the set."
KYLE MUNSON, Register Music Critic “Northeast Iowa country bluesman Joe Price, who proved to be the night’s show stopper, performed with his wife and son…… He’s the artist on the Trailer roster whose work sounds so unfiltered, one would think it was a decades-old field recording snatched from the Smithsonain vaults.... …Fever pitch was reached by the smiling swaying Price and company. He electrified the room solo with songs such as “Chicago Northwestern Line”, and then his singer-guitarist wife, Vicki and drummer son Keni Ewing, joined him. The roof was blown off when his set included Jim Viner on washboard; Dave Zollo, Bo Ramsey and upright bassist, Rick Cicalo.” Feb. 25, 2002
Bob Covemaker,President MVBS 102 South Harrison St. Suite 300 Davenport, IA 52801 www.mvbs.org A veteran of over 30 years performing, he is an accomplished slide player with unique song writing and vocal talents as well. Obviously influenced by the masters, he has shown he is not a slave to them. From classic country blues to the hard hitting style of Hound Dog Taylor, Joe has shown a mastery of slide guitar, few artists anywhere posses. Personal Reference 2004
LUTHER BLUES Madison Wisconsin Joe Price, an artist cut from the same cloth as the traveling blues men of years past. Despite his critical success, Joe has remained devoted to his fans, giving his best to each and every person, each and every night. He is truly a tangible person in every sense, even while he is a legend-in-the-making. Price has treated lucky patrons and the staff at Luther’s Blues to fine shows time and time again. And all have developed an appreciation for him extending far beyond his musical talent. We would like to share him with the rest of Madison. Although Joe is still the Midwest’s best-kept secret, he won’t be for long. LBNewsletter March 2004 Granite City Folk Society St. Cloud Mn Charlie Roth “After seeing Joe Price for the first time it became clear to me how he has honed his craft to the point where he is not just emulating his heroes anymore…He has become a vessel for the spirit of long dead blues men from the 20’s and 30’s. I felt as if Robert Johnson was there in that room.” Personal Reference 2005
—Eric Yarwood— Maintenance Shop Coordinator, Ames Iowa “One who left everyone in awe was Joe Price. His slide-guitar, foot stompin’, vocal based blues riveted everyone’s attention, and brought applause after every song.” M-Shop Newsletter March 2002
“…things got a little rowdy when Delta Blues guitarist Joe Price hit the stage. Price, who hails from Lansing, IA, started off with a boot-stomping, hand-clapping song that nearly brought the house down – literally: dancers were asked to move back from the stage and tone down their dancing in order to keep the barn’s floor from caving.” ---CHIPS Luther College Student Paper Sept. 9, 1997
“Once Joe’s guitar starts playing the tables and bar clear out and the dance floor becomes a whirlwind of movement. Joe’s shows are always full of energy and everyone leaves with a full ‘blues to the bone’ workout. He’s an honest tell-it-like-it-is performer and you know when he asks the crowd, “Is everybody havin’ a good time? that he really means it.” -- David Lester; Luther College, Marty’s Restaurant & Entertainment Manager Personal Reference 2005
Jim Musser - Free-lance writer “….Price churned out a nonstop blend of originals and chestnuts only a stone bluesologist could hope to separate. ……By the time Price finished up the festivities with a brace of shuffling tunes…the dragging limbs of the dance floor faithful indicated precious little was left in anyone’s tank.” Sept/Oct 1999 "Price has continued to hone and develop his considerable musical gifts to the point where a case could be made for him as one of the very best, most distinctive blues guitarists alive today.” --Jim Musser Icon Magazine, Iowa City April 10, 1997
Joe Price: From Greg Brown Country comes another distinctive vocalist with a feed sack full of original songs. A deft steel guitar player, Price sings back-porch blues like a corn belt John Lee Hooker. --JW July/August 1992
FOLK FORUM - The General Store Lake City, MN “Joe’s blues are possibly the most pure and authentic among today’s artists. At a time when mainstream blues is becoming slicker and more commercialized, Joe digs deep and retrieves the spirit of classical blues, contributing his own unmistakable original voice.” Newsletter General Store 2000
“I loved 25 Below. What makes Joe so special is what he does to the rhythms. There’s a lot to love here. It’s a great feeling, it’s like old and new simultaneously. He captures the feeling of one of my favorite blueswomen, Jessie Mai Hemphill.” ---Gaye Adegbalola Personal Reference Letter 2003
"Another one who has always been that way for me is Joe Price. He’s amazing – just incredible! I mean, he’s the real deal, man… he is seriously plugged in. He’s a challenging guy to take the stage with, because he is so raw …. And he’s also a great songwriter. Greg (Brown) worships him – he calls Joe ‘The Buddha’. ” -- Bo Ramsey Icon Magazine, Iowa City Nov. 1996 www.boramsey.com www.gregbrown.org
